Descartes and neurodiversity memes

Published by: Peter

In the 17th Century, to establish the difference between  human and non-humans, Rene Descartes claimed that humans had both bodies and minds whereas animals had only bodies. This mistaken belief, wherein body and mind are treated as separate entities, still persists today among many mental health and other occupational health professionals; with disastrous consequences.

Thus dyslexia, ADHD, autism, dyspraxia, bi-polar are currently labelled as different forms of 'mind' neurodiversity. This is true of them in their singular and co-morbid forms.

Indeed the current epoch can reasonably called The Age of Neurodiversity. For it is almost impossible now to avoid being informed that some celebrity or public figure suffers from one or other form of neurodiversity. It's almost a badge of honour to be so labelled. .

The trend to label any presumed divergence from an imagined norm can be more productively treated as a meme. The validity of their separateness is founded, indirectly, on the belief that the body and the mind are separate entities coexisting in the same individual.

The consequences of this 'world view' are evidenced by the at worst ineffective and at best short term benefits of 'treatment programmes'. Here it is worth asking why isn't repeat offending and recidivism also regarded as a neurodiverse condition? It could plausibly be argued that this behaviour too has been engendered by a condition beyond the control of that individual.
